So, today is Earth Day and it got me thinking about what it actually means and how I could keep the air in my home clean! Below are 5 awesome benefits I learned about house plants and how they can improve your mood, health, and air!
Earth Day has been celebrated since 1970, always on April 22nd. It has become a time to celebrate all the Earth has given us and how we can, in return, help it back. Several common ideas are to recycle, clean up parks, use less lights, and even go for a walk to just appreciate nature. Another fun way help “clean up” the air we breath would be to own plants.
Having suffered from anxiety lately, I wanted to find a way to celebrate Earth Day that had some health benefits for myself. I knew house plants were beneficial but yet I never owned one!
Today, I took the leap and went out and purchased our first house plant! She really is a beaut, if I do say so myself! Her name is Sheila the Schefflera! She enjoys water occasionally, plant food every now and again, and moderate amounts of sunlight! She really is about as low maintenance as a love could be!
In my research I came across the Bayer Advanced website and I loved the benefits they gave to owning house plants.
Below are 5 awesome ways house plants are beneficial!
1. Help You Breathe Easier
As humans, when we breathe we take in oxygen and release carbon dioxide. Plants do the opposite! This partnership increases the oxygen in the air. There are certain plants though such as succulents, orchids, and bromelaids that are better suited for nighttime when regular houseplants acts as humans and absorb oxygen and release carbon dioxide. These nighttime plants help balance everything by taking in carbon dioxide and expelling oxygen just like regular plants do during the daytime. Now how cool is that?!
2. Increase Humidity
Did you know that plants release 97% of the water they take in?! So naturally that water is put back into the air and the humidity is increased! This, in return, helps keep respiratory issue at bay. Have issues breathing at night and want a humidifier? Just buy a house plant and keep it in your bedroom!
3. Purify the Air
Plants can remove up to 87% of the toxins in your home in a 24 hour period including the harmful toxins found in rugs, carpet, paint, solvents, and man-made fibers. Try adding plants to your office spaces as well for a better work environment!
4. Improve Health
A study done at K-State showed that patients with plants in their hospital rooms had lower blood pressure, anxiety, fatigue, and required less medication than their counterparts. Now you can better appreciate the plants people bring you on your next hospital visit (because we all know we’ll have one sometime). Make sure to thank them for helping in your recovery by bringing you a plant!
5. Improved Focus
Studies show that there is greater attentiveness when studying in a room with a plant. Who knows what could happen if all our classrooms had plants!
When choosing house plants make sure you pick ones that are suitable for the type of sunlight they will be receiving. Some plants require more sunlight than others and would do better in a room with more windows. Also the recommendation is to have one 8-inch house plant for every 129 square feet of your home.
Accumulating that many plants can take time! While we might not have all 9 house plants that is recommended, we are on our way to having a cleaner and healthier home just by owning Sheila!
Make sure to check out Bayer Advanced site to see what plant types are recommended and how to properly care for them!
Now, get out of your home and find a unique way to celebrate Earth Day. Take in all the beauty our environment has to offer!
